Juno Results Require New Theories on Giant Planet Formation

Juno results have demonstrated that Jupiter has a complex internal structure.

Surprises include the interior is not fully mixed and has a fuzzy core.

Jupiter’s dilute core could be a signature of its formation process and/or mixing as well as a giant impact (less likely).

Combining the aspects of Jupiter’s formation, evolution and structure is critical for revealing its true nature.

Jupiter’s interior is under great pressure.  Understanding Jupiter’s interior requires knowledge of how hydrogen behaves at very high pressure, which is not well know. This is called the hydrogen Equation of State.

Juno’s discoveries provide insights on both Jupiter and giant exoplanets.
