This image shows Io appearing from behind Jupiter as seen from the Juno spacecraft. In the next image obtained by JunoCam, Io had become fully visible and was more than 100 pixels from the limb.

Here we are seeing Io through Jupiter's atmosphere. As a result it appears reddest and darkest closest to the limb. The part of Io farthest from the limb is heavily processed since Io moved slightly relative to Jupiter

in the short time that passed between acquisition of the blue image data and the red image data. Without this processing Io's limb would have had an unrealistic, deep blue color.

Here Jupiter appears darker relative to Io than it does in most of the images that show Jupiter and Io together. This is because here we are looking at Jupiter's relatively dark south polar region and Jupiter's limb darkening also plays a role.

North is down. This approximately true color/contrast image is enlarged by a factor of 4 relative to the original data.
